What about backups? My greatest fear is self-hosting valuable stuff (like family photos) only for my NAS to fail one day and lose potentially everything.
I remember one (might have been a hn-er's comment, dunno) about the computer restarting when the toilet was flushed. Turns out it was due to voltage drop when a compressor turned on to refill the reservoir of the toilet.
Easy for Bill Gates to advocate for this, as he already got rich partly by people automating away lots of jobs using his operating systems and softwares.
Likewise in Hungary. When an opposition party leader (after a big election flop) suggested that instead of importing cultural issues from the US, opposition parties should concentrate on the problems of the people living here, it was almost treated as a heresy.
Can you explain why do you find the above explanation amusing? I honestly don't see the absurdity of it, although, my livelihood may depend on me not seeing it :)
In uni I remember one of my professors telling us that the time gap between the awarding of the Nobel prize and the discovery for which it is awarded keeps getting longer (he was talking specifically about physics). I remember he also lamented George Gamow never getting a Nobel prize. (edit: grammar)
My train of thought is similar, but a bit more naïve: As the generation who grew up on these classics gets into influential positions, they want to produce things similar to what they liked. But a demand-side explanation like yours is more realistic than a supply-side one.
