yeah, most of the kernel maintainers in that thread seem to be against it. bcachefs does seem to also have a non-code-generating implementation of this, as it runs on architectures other than x86-64.

I don't think running on a bunch of CPU architectures is really unique to NeXT. Windows NT ran/runs on x86, Arm, Alpha, MIPS, Itanium, and PowerPC, all with a desktop as a full-blown product. Forms of desktop Linux will run on all of those and more.

They weren't based on the same novel -- but the novels "Fail Safe" and "Red Alert" were similar enough, and the release dates of "Fail Safe" and "Dr. Strangelove" were so close that Peter George and Stanley Kubrick sued the author and production of Fail Safe over copyright.
