Well, yeah - middle-level management is one of the worst positions to be in. You have a lot of responsibilities, but not enough ways to influence things. And the pay often isn't higher than before.
Is this a generational thing? I'm gen-X, but have spent most of my career trying to avoid being promoted. Being in a managerial position is awful, and I've only been willing to do it for my own companies.
