The American Medical Association and health insurance industries can all fuck off. The healthcare situation in the US is so absurd and Kafka-esque I welcome LLMs in medicine. I haven’t seen a MD in years, I’ve only seen nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Add to that how insurance will randomly deny tests, procedures and treatments, I have very little use for the current medical establishment.
I recently read Kurt Vonnegut “Player Piano”, a novel that addresses automation taking over the economy. It’s not explicitly AI but addresses the same issues. Published in 1952, it was Vonneguts first novel and a real product of the post war era.[1]
Another interesting read that addresses these themes is “Manna – Two Views of Humanity’s Future” by Marshal Brain [2]
I’ve often thought it was the cost of electricity and crypto mining being banned a few years ago. China has a lot of “stranded electricity” which fits this usecase well.
Larry’s son runs paramount now, and given he’s driving it to become the next Fox News challenger, it’s a given the current admin will give them a sweet heart deal.
I found this novella researching AI effect on work and society. What happens when AI takes all the jobs? It’s quiet stretched in places but presents a coherent view of where ai could take us.
Good luck dude! This kind of move can pay off big or not, clearly. I’ve personally talked to fable about this a lot, suggest everyone does.
There are a lot of failure modes. The dot-com bubble looked obvious in 1997; it popped in 2000. Anyone shorting in '97-'98 was carried out on a stretcher before being vindicated. In fact 2000-2002 fell in three brutal legs over two years, and anyone who leveraged up after the first 25% leg was destroyed by the next two.
The conclusion I came to on this was to watch for indicators it’s not working out. Canceling these large capex projects is one. Meta scaling back on their compute recently eerily fits that indicator.
In fact anyone reading should ask fable about indicators and ai bubbles, I just did and it was startling!
The fact the AI emperor wears no clothes seems clear to me at least.
My strat is to accumulate cash to buy the drop. The danger with this is; will the bubble continue until the bottom is even higher than today? I’ll take that bet.
Russia emptied the prisons years ago. The able bodied men of Donetsk and Luhansk were rounded up and fed to grinder years ago as well. The wanton slaughter of their own people has been startling and depraved for their unending exuberance.
What percentage of humans are urban dwelling and don’t even see the stars at night? Related there aren’t many places on earth where you can still see the Milky Way. In that way a similar trade off has been made with no forethought whatsoever. Should this time be different? I think so.
I suggest that reading previously took the roll devices take today. When my parents weren’t at work they were reading as often as not; newspapers and novels.
I have heard but don’t have first hand knowledge that at least one company (financial services BPO) has moved most of their previously manual processing to llms. The person I talked to wasn’t forthcoming with any detail. This is what we’d expect to see though.
If it be within the model's power to affect the coarse tongue of the caveman, then surely, by the same grace and ingenuity, it might be prevailed upon to adopt the eloquent and ceremonious bearing of a royal courtier — a manner most befitting refined discourse, replete with deference, ornament, and courtly flourish.
We had a vp of engineering at a retail place who came from windows shop and wanted to restart the servers every night of the holiday season. It took some doing but we finally convinced him “this is Linux we don’t have to that!”
