Metaverse was a flop maybe, but meta makes something like $1 billion a week from its mobile apps, it'd be crazy to say that is not successful.
The fact that it was so successful, and that zuck picked mobile to be the next big thing before many of his peers and against what managers in the company wanted to do is probably what has made him now overconfident that he can do it again
I don't think thats true. If you'd only ever played Doom, I think you could play, say, counterstrike or half-life and be pretty good at it, and i think Carmack is right that its pretty interesting that this doesn't seem to be the case for ai models
We actually released an app for WP7 and then just as the platform was starting to get traction, they released WP8, made it backwards incompatible and told everyone to rewrite their apps. It killed the platform overnight. Maybe you can get companies to take a chance on a new platform once, but you can't then deprecate every device and app a year later and expect everyone to do the same thing again

Fogbugz just got outcompeted by JIRA imo, and without the cross compiling that allowed it to run on linux (instead of just windows server) it would have been dead long long before.
You can run stable diffusion on a MBP and produce images in under a minute. It's training these models that takes the crazy GPU power - running them is quite reasonable.
Good question, and I don't know the answer, because I've never seen the alternatives. In WP anyone can create a group, and make it private, so you can just make a private group for a bunch of engineers to work on some project with no pressure to be 'performative' for the rest of the company. Basically its a replacement for email distribution lists, but with many advantages over plain email.
One of the things I miss working at Facebook is the internal FB (called Workplace). It basically replaced email for the whole company, and worked really well for long form posts where maybe you would write some proposal up or make an announcement and get a bunch of comments. I now work at a slack centric company, and it just doesn't compare - there is no 'newsfeed', so unless you remember to check all the channels, you end up missing stuff. You can send out a group email, but people are reluctant to reply-all, so this doesn't get good discussion either.
This is like the idea of using Pi for compression - if Pi contains all strings of digits, then we find whatever data we want to encode in Pi and store the index where it starts. But turns out the number of digits in the index is going to be (on average) greater than the number of digits pointed to in Pi anyway
