Are you saying that the ones who take this pandemic serious also take the "ghastly future of mass extinction" serious?
I oppose this 100%, I take the "ghastly future of mass extinction" very serious and my solution would be to introduce a close to zero birthrate of the extremely overpopulated species of Homo Sapiens. I do not however take this pandemic serious at all and it is NOTHING compared to what is and will happen in the "ghastly future".
We are living in a planetary wide human farm, they told us this was gonna happen! And it will happen again and again until we have devoured the planet.
Oh, such techno-utopianism, cheer the tech!!
Sweden still has increased death rates due to Chernobyl, this disaster is still killing by a statistical significance, if we make it to the future we could forget it and later remind ourselves by looking in the atmosphere, in the mud, in the food, in the oceans, in the animals, in the ice and we can find traces of the man made disaster in DNA, in the fingerprint of God, we are the Gods now...
If you haven't figured it out yet, if you still believe in the government's figures, I've got one thing to tell you: pull your head out of your ass.
For one example, the leaders of the free world are now leaving the so called Paris Agreement, because they believe anthropogenic climate change is a hoax.
Are they still telling you the truth?
Okay, back to nuclear now for a second round. We are likely to see a worldwide collapse due to many reasons, but lets blame a lot of it to the actions of the government's mentioned. Before you dismiss this premise I would like to inform that this is a major fear, and therefor a major field of research for the nuclear industry and is a major reason to why we even care about long term storage of the waste – if everything "went well", why would we care about a thousand years? if we can manage "it" now we for sure can in the future when our GDP is like risen by a gazillion percents.
We must pause here, this is the thing: we are talking about waste that is extremely insanely dangerous if it would "leak" out, if this would happen our civilization would be finished, life could die out (not like we are not killing of 100-200 species a day already, but hey, gotta go faster!)
Where were we now, right: can you imagine this planet in five hundred years? and the nuclear waste has to be securely stored for hundreds of thousands of years. This is the reason they try to universal signs instead of writing the warning in plain language [1].
I am way off the article now, so Sweden and France has a decarbonized their economies? Where a the figures? I would guess without looking into any numbers, that both Sweden and France has in fact increased their carbon output since they started using nuclear power, I would go so far that I would argue that they have in fact increased their carbon output because they have added nuclear. By using nuclear power we grow our economy, the larger the economy the more carbon output.
Air travel is such a non issue, for any person flying it will of course be a large part of their carbon footprint, but the atmosphere does not care where the CO2 came from.
4k? "They" can come up with any number they want to, some say it is as low as 28, counting only the dead firefighters.
I live in the worst fallout area in Sweden and our nature is still very radioactive. Cancer rates here are of course increased compared to the rest of the country.
And of course, the worst is yet to come. I believe more than 4k Swedish people have died or have their lives drastically shortened due to Chernobyl.
Methane lifetime in the atmosphere is 11 years, if we "only" put as much in as eleven years ago it will go flat.
Pretty hard to keep the curve up if we do not get help from the permafrost which has an enormous amount of methane locked up.
Looks like it will blow any day now though!
"Google, Audi, Carbon Engineering, Global Thermostat, Climeworks, and labs at universities and national labs have all done it before us. What no one has been able to do so far is do it at a low enough cost to compete with fossil fuel." So Google failed but Prometheus will succeed.
Are you just trying to make a buck in The End Times?
I have no feedback, Mother Earth has, probably a couple of hundreds of them loops... We are screwed.
"At the same time, environmental quality in the First World has improved dramatically."
I do not know where to begin, but i am facing the tongue of our mother culture. I am facing not only your arguments, i am facing an operating system. It is high time we clean our disks.
To mention a few, we now get microplastics from our tap water [1], and bottled water [2].
Reports of substantial insects loss from all over the world [3][4].
Study shows that the oceans will be dead if we continue as we do [5].
Life loses 150-200 species a day, we are currently living in the Sixth mass extinction [6], i was about to write "the planet loses", but the planet simply does care, only life do.
Our way of farming is killing the soils [7], it is fake, all fake. We kill the soils and we depend on a limited supply of chemical fertilizer.
People have the idea that the soils are made for this, one of the greatest lies.
How can you say that the life is better when were at 407 PPM of CO2 and counting, and we have no clue about what is about to happen. The limits in the glacial/interglacial system we've been in for the past million years are 180-280 PPM.
I could go on an on but to put it simply. All the problems we've solved are problems of our culture, that said, we have not solved any other problem and we have not solved all our problems.
Our problem is that we can't stop our growth. Event if we stopped the population growth all the other charts would point straight up!
Why did 20,000 scientists give a dire warning in their 'letter to humanity'? [8]
It is us, we keeps this going, we all need more stuff, more energy to take us to new highs of 'humanity'.
Far better life, yes, we work and we feed and we Netflix™.
Far better than what?
There was a life before domestication by, for and in our culture. We've been Homo for three million years and we've been Homo Sapiens Sapiens for three hundred thousand.
Being born today is a roulette spin, there is no guarantees that your genes will match this system.
Our current culture is so far off from what our bodies, minds and that small process which we call 'me' are made for.
Look at the chart, the numbers are correct, everything grows (in large amounts).
We are about to double the amount of fossil fueled cars in the next 10-15 years.
It will not matter how much solar we install if we keep increasing our fossil burning (as we will).
In fact, we use other sources of energy than oil to extract and refine the oil.
We are terribly addicted to oil.
One could say we sold our mother (Earth) for a shot of hubris.
It took us to the Moon and the stars. It gives and it takes lives, one could think we are dealing with the Devil.
For each day we do not decrease our fossil fuel use nothing will make a difference, the fact is that the Earth is becoming a worse place for each of those days.
Our culture is not only addicted to oil, there is a bigger picture.
Our culture is dependent on growth, hence the addiction to energy, all kinds of energy.
We will go on this way, no matter what, for as long as we can.
