I agree with this assessment. I've been running two nodes for about a year, maybe longer, and in that time, I've only had perhaps two contacts.
Even with a YAGI or a dedicated pole antenna, both tuned to 868 MHz, the range in my location is quite poor. The signal seems to drop off quickly, even after walking just a kilometer down the road. While I understand that height is key (and my antennas are fairly high), it appears that 868 MHz attenuates very rapidly.
So, to reiterate, I don't believe Meshtastic is a particularly effective solution. The principle behind it is sound, but the practical execution falls short. I think established methods like Hamnet and traditional amateur radio are far superior, especially now with SDRs making a simple handheld radio incredibly affordable (around €20)
Ah yes. I've had to repair one of the Dallas ICs before. You have to dig out a dremel and bite down till you get to the metal then add some hook up wire. Unlike OP I chose to use rechargable batteries that used to be used for home wireless phones - they are the right voltage and often they supply a battery charger.
If you're lucky you can desolder the the old battery and use a couple of pin headers to get you back up and running. I do find it irritating some retro machines wont even boot without a working battery.

One tip you may appreciate is to use the Australian version of airbnb (.au), their regulators require them to show the true cost of the rental, including all fees in the headline price.

My newly found issue with Dell and the XPS 13 9360 series is their insane costs.
Dell you see wont give you an indication of cost, instead you must send the laptop back at a cost of £40.
Stupidly I thought they'd be fair, but no they came back with a quote for £626. They had no interest in offering a discount - so I told them to send it back and get shoved.
£40 was the cost of my laziness. Now I'll just DIY for significantly less.
Worth baring in mind if you're not confident repairing the machine yourself.
