Even 20 years ago, $200 for a PCI IDE card (unless there's something very Apple-specific about it) seems extremely overpriced. They are around 1/10th of that price now.

AFAICR, the feature one had to pay for was ROM containing PowerPC code. It made Apple-compatible PCI cards much more expensive than x86-compatible. Especially video.
Of course now they're cheap. What was a typical price back then?
I don't remember exactly, but it was definitely less than $100.
