I also miss the web. When HTTP form posts were a thing. React and friends are desktop apps, delivered over HTTP, where the browser is the runtime. You know why we got so obsessed with JavaScript? Cause screen refreshes look janky. "Just use XMLHttpRequest to send the data ONLY over the wire! And get data ONLY as a response!" That's how we got into this mess. I'm not saying you don't need JavaScript, or there aren't reasons to use React. I'm saying there are easier solutions to jank. If good engineering is the ability to design the least complicated solution to a problem, we are far from good engineering.
I recently visited Tulum and experienced their architecture firsthand. It is breathtaking in both form and function. Beautiful in every way.
Their philosophy got me thinking -- are there lessons to be learned in software? Do we use the same workflow for everything, when perhaps a bespoke workflow could be more appropriate for some projects? Do you already do this?
Billionaires would still be doing just fine if they were cut in half over 60 years. The point is that right now they are freezing the economy by hiding most of it's energy in their private storehouses. Imagine what we could accomplish if those glaciers of personal wealth were melted down and distributed throughout the rest of the economy.
I see microservices as a people/team architecture. It's a way to scale up people and define boundaries around who is responsible for what, without having to standardize how everyone implements what they are responsible for. Just expose it as a REST API. Problem solved. And problems created. This isn't all bad, it just isn't a "everyone should do this and all your problems will go away" architecture. That architecture doesn't exist.
"Raise them to the level of white people". Your white fragility is quite transparent. I'm just starting to understand my own. Watch this if you really want to know. Watch and read a hundred other things to educate yourself on the oppression of blacks in America. Then you will understand what you just said. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CA6XUruBYAO
Meditation. It's a skill that can be learned quickly and teach you to notice not just your constant firehose of thoughts, but the emotions that come with them and which often steer you towards poor decisions.
It did finally show up in our PHD, but it showed up as having been resolved:
"[08:52 AM PDT] Between 7:49AM PDT and 8:27AM PDT EC2 experienced elevated API errors for instance related APIs in a single Availability Zone in the US-EAST-1 region. Existing instances were not affected. The issue has been resolved and the service is operating normally."
I was logging on here to call out that quote specifically. My kids are both in college now, and we're empty nesters for the first time as of a week ago.
My advice to all of you with young kids is to follow that advice. Schedule 1:1 time with each of your kids, and make it more important than your most important meeting at work.
