> That said, I thought that the rule in the UK was generally that the loser pays the winners costs
That’s generally true… but only happens after those costs have been incurred and probably paid.
There’s no guarantee the party suing will be able to cover their own costs and the defendant’s costs. That leaves OP on the hook for defence costs with the hope that they might get them back after a successful and likely expensive defence.
In that situation, I can understand why OP wouldn’t want to take the risk.
It’s great for you that you can move on so quickly, but I think it’s a mistake to assume others can or should. Your experience is not the same as others, and your situation isn’t either.
In my case, I have pets and a young child living with me. The dogs may get over the violated sense of safety quite easily, but my little girl likely wouldn’t. It’s imperative to her healthy development that I be able to provide her a safe, secure place to live that also feels safe and secure.
Call me selfish but that overrides my concerns for the chaotic state of other peoples’ lives: their problems do not entitle them to harm my family.
I wonder why they’re using Gateron switches rather than Cherry ones? Is it just about cutting costs, or is there a solid technical reason for using clones rather than the originals?
Can you explain a bit more about what you mean by “way more nuanced conditions about what exact font to load”? I’ve tried both approaches recently and found using Google to be quicker and less work, but didn’t find it more nuanced or specific. What have I missed?
Quite the contrary. I work in a call centre and we’re intensely stressed by the constant, microscopic surveillance. Everything is watched and logged and can be used against you, and the targets they measure you against creep ever higher.
I use Freelists for a tiny mailing list I run and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Setup is a little strange, and some of the admin settings aren't entirely intuitive, but when it's up and running it's excellent.
They've been specifically bred to exaggerate characteristics that are not healthy. The predominant result is brachycephalism which causes breathing and heat regulation issues amongst other things. This is also why they can't give birth naturally.
What basis do you have for concluding it was an anti-trans false-flag operation in this poster's case? Nothing in their post would lead me to naturally reach that conclusion. Downplaying or instantly dismissing this kind of anecdata as the result of a "false flag" is naive at best and dangerous at worst.
Speaking from my own experience, I've seen a lot of stuff on Tumblr that leads me to think there's a very active, very angry, very threatening trans lobby on the platform. I've seen repeated threats of violence and worse from trans-identified individuals directed at feminists who want maintain female-only safe-spaces. These posts are rarely taken down and the community will often rally against the "TERFs" being threatened ("Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists").
I know one woman who'd posted about keeping changing rooms for females separated on a sex basis. Her employer and college were contacted repeatedly by a pair of people who said she was spreading hate-speech online. Their goal seems to have been to have her fired. These same people had been making threats of violence against her, culminating in a rape threat. At this point the police became involved and I'm not sure how it's since been resolved.
Obviously this is a tiny minority of people but it's a tiny minority that often aren't actively censured or disowned by the larger community, and whose extreme views are reinforced by a sympathetic echo-chamber of like-minded people. Some may be "false-flags", but I don't think they're in the majority by any means.
Yellowing in paper is a combination of factors, primarily cellulose content, acidity, and exposure to light, heat, and air. Decent bond paper from the 1980s will generally look just fine if it's stored in a dry box. It has a low acidity and will normally have a higher dag content do will age more slowly.
Exposing it to sunlight and/or excessive heat will cause it to age. If it's high cellulose paper, like a newspaper, it will generally yellow quickly regardless of the storage because newspaper is cheap and acidic and not intended to last.
I see this argument a lot on here, and while I agree with it logically and factually, it totally dismisses the human element.
Rice, beans, and vegetables are very nutritious and cheap but they're generally boring in comparison to a bag of Cheetos or a doughnut.
When you're dirt poor, you don't have many avenues to get a quick pick-me-up feeling -- so often that comes from junk food. A $1 burger is not as good for you as $1 of veg and rice, but it gives you more momentary pleasure and activates the reward centres in your brain.
Even as you eat it, you know you could be eating something more nutritious which would be better for you in the long-run, but you still eat it. Once you do it the first time, the subsequent times become easier, especially if it's loaded with sugar and you get yourself in a high/low blood sugar cycle.
I'm not defending it, and I'm not saying people have no control over themselves, but I just wish people would have a little more compassion and understanding when they go for the "beans and veg are cheap" argument.
In scenarios #2 and #3 very few people are winning. I think you'd be hard-pressed to get majority support against #1, which would be more generally beneficial for society than the other two.
I think the real product is the data of the person using the 'free' WiFi. The WiFi is a service designed to gain access to that product. In that instance, the data of someone spending £1,000 on a phone is more valuable than the data of someone using a PAYG iPhone 4S.
I remember this being a minor fad around this when I had my first, handcoded website hosted on the 5MB of webspace my dial-up ISP gave me. I'm pretty sure I heard about it from one of the other regulars on irc.scifi.com, the Sci-Fi Channel's IRC server that I used to frequent.
With a little cut-and-paste of some code from Swatch's website you could have a GIF 'clock' on your site that showed the 'internet time' to your visitors. Utterly pointless, but harmless fun.
Exactly this. I have a chronic wrist injury from a previous job. Physiotherapy hasn't really helped, and the only thing that does help when I have a bad day is naproxen (another NSAID in the same class as ibuprofen). I feel guilty taking it in the dose I do (1000mg/day) but it's the only thing that makes life bearable and makes me functional.
That depends on your living situation. I live in a third-floor apartment, so weight is very definitely a factor.
