Preferred stock is actually a form of debt. It gets paid after the bond-holders but before the shareholders.

It almost never carries voting rights.

The reason for not paying a dividend is that cash distributed that way is taxed more highly than cash distributed in a share buy-back.

I agree with you that if no dividend is payed and shares will not be bought-back, the company is effectively worthless.

+1 to the "high course join, low course completion" crowd.

One thing that I did at work was establish a betting pool with two other co-workers on the Coursera C++ course that finished in December - completers would collect from non-completers. That is my one Coursera completion.

I'm pretty sure that attaching betting pools to MOOC sites would make a major difference to completion rates for participants.
