I'm consistently amazed by HN's ability to take the most meaningless, inconsequential part of an article (the scroll behavior, the whitespace, the usage of the word "bricked"), and nitpick it to hell and back instead of actually discussing the article.
It's basically a disingenuous thought-terminating cliché, much like people who say "if you don't like your job then just quit" to people who are being exploited at work. Sure, you technically can "just fork" a project, but everybody knows that projects aren't just the code: they're the community, the mindshare, the maintainers, etc. It's also a very political act with social consequences. You could divide a project's community if you fork and do manage to become big enough.
So yeah. People saying "just fork" are being disingenuous, and I think they know that.
You know this is a false equivalence. The Bar is to make sure you actually understand now only law, but also things like ethics. Whereas a Google interview wants you to code an AVL tree in Brainfuck with your toes while reciting the alphabet backwards because "that's what they made ME do and I got hired and am smart, so that must be what works".
Or, if you just quarantine everybody (hence the advice to stay the hell home and assume you have it), then the curve flattens. You don't need a test to stay home.
They don't think we can bounce back, but they sure as hell WANT us to. Why? The market goes up and they profit. Look at what motivates people and then the things they say start to make a lot more sense.
