As a US person myself, I don't really take issue with stopping extraditions because it would probably be a lot cheaper just to execute enemies abroad. Think how much money Putin has saved over the years. Now the whole Kashoggi mess shows how easy it is for this approach to backfire, so you certainly have to be careful.
I think you're right and we should just use a different word instead of fighting against the plain meaning. It shouldn't come as a surprise that when it takes 4 paragraphs to explain why the plain meaning of a word isn't how the word's allowed to be used, there will be a lot of people who don't get it.
I don't think anyone would argue with the value side of the question. The tricky part is calculating the cost side. (The cost of not deleting old messages.)
Surely we can agree that the cost side is > 0.
I'd argue that the benefit side is generally at least a little lower than what we think it's going to be. And if the expiration limit is set to say, 1 year, the cost of deleting old messages goes down considerably.

How does buying one with good intentions that goes unused hurt any other effort? I don't think I'd have even heard of any other devices if it weren't for the attention that the Pi gets.
The real problem with talking about slippery slopes in tech is that we're already on an unrecoverable slide into the unknown. So the question is just "does this new thing make the slide even faster?" Not, "we're on stable ground and we need to be careful about beginning a slide."
There's no going back and we have no idea where we're headed.
The desperate clinging to a numeric system oriented to the binary internals of a computer in the human interface to those internals is insane. Choosing base 2 numeric systems as the default number system in any high level language is just shortsighted and stupid.
Maybe DEC64 is flawed, but can we stop pretending that we like binary-based default systems for any reason other than the barrier to entry it creates for newcomers and visceral feeling of communing with computer internals.
Binary has a place -- in low-level languages. Like assembler. There's nothing wrong with any language providing a non-decimal system as an optional number type.
The system we have in many high-level languages is a frankenstein of a binary system that you usually interact with through decimal representation.
The proposal gets at least one thing right: the languages of the future will have a numeric system default that has less insanity. But it will take the passing of a generation or two of developers.
I'm not sure which is worse: unaccountable Big Tech or Big Tech 100% accountable to governments.
I'd be more sympathetic if it seemed he wanted Big Tech less powerful, instead of simply transferring control of that power to elected officials that are cheaper to buy than controlling interests in Big Tech companies.
