The government does not need a warrant to gain access to your information, easily evidenced by mass surveillance of the world for the past 15 years. If they really want something you have, they will just take it mobster style and tell you to go fuck yourself. They don't have to charge you with a crime, they can charge your property with a crime and force you to deal with a kafkaesque process where your property is guilty until proven innocent by the people who issued the very order to seize it. Information + Encryption is one of the only things regular people have that is resistant to this process.

They do need a warrant for any information to not get laughed out a US court though. This is the main reason they are going after the data this way, because they want what they found and know wouldn't survive discovery to eventually be admissible as legally obtained evidence. That and it will set a nice precedent for them to deputize private persons and corporation into being law enforcement when they just can't be asked to not fuck up one simple thing.

This is also not-coincidently a case likely to polarize people against Apple with the old faithful terrorists are coming to get you rhetoric. A most slippery slope indeed, nearly guaranteeing that everyone who is supposed to be checking the executive branch for overreach will just go along with them wholesale.

The "war on drugs" has easily been one of the largest institutional failures of the late 20th century and is on track to be one of the major failures of the early 21st. It has single handedly shown to snyone who will look that the entire system is tainted past the point of self-repair. The loss of liberty, the mass invasion privacy and the subversion of the the post-justice system are just the most obvious side effects of a government determined to judge-dread first and seek approval later.

The war on drugs is just a manifeststion of what is possible if the system is willing to turn in ward for its own benifit. How long will the lower class continue to be segregated and disrespected in the name of a lost and poisonous cause no major politician has the self respect to stand up against? How many more people will we label sub-human and dispose of in all but name for the supposed benefit of society?

It's a terrible hack, but changing your Skype password via their website does log you out of all active sessions within a 2-5 minute timeframe. A friends Skype got "hacked" via a third party botting a message to all of his contacts, and as soon as I changed the password the spam stopped and soon after his local client logged out.

Also IANAL but from what I know the law has not been interpreted to use (in my opinion) a reasonable definition of the word effective. The law requires 2 things here for a covered protection to be "effective":

  #1 That the protection on the copy is "sufficient" to protect the rights of a copyright holder of the original work, and

  #2 That the copyright owner is satisfied with the protection provided by the copied work.

To me at least, this seems insane. You can theoretically claim DCMA based relief for anything forever by taking its bitstream format and flipping every bit once. That coupled with the knowledge of the copyright owner will be enough to be covered under this reading of "effective".

The linked court decision states on page 28:

98. To prevail on a DMCA claim for violation of the copy-control provision, plaintiff must show that CSS “effectively protects a right of a copyright owner under” the DMCA. 17 U.S.C. § 1201(b)(1). Under that section, a technological measure “effectively protects a right of a copyright owner . . . if the measure, in the ordinary course of its operation, prevents, restricts, or otherwise limits the exercise of a right of a copyright owner under this title.” 17 U.S.C. § 1201(b)(2)(B). For the reasons articulated above, the court finds that CSS technology is an effective technological measure to prevent copying of copyrighted DVD content by the average consumer. That CSS technology has been hacked does not disturb this conclusion.

The RealNetworks case where this was decided is linked below. The case basically went "There is this program that uses freely available code that technically breaks your DCMA approved protection method, CSS, but because CSS still works to protect rights due to the breadth of it's implementation, it is not sufficiently broken by your program or the freely available knowledge you used to make it, and the Court finds for the Plaintiff." (my interpretation from reading page 56)

Is human handwriting anything more then repeated patterns with lines and shapes on a 2d plane?

A computer program designed by humans to assist with human constructs can infer meaning from what appears to be mostly noise to humans. It hits us hard because communication through complex language is the defining trait of our species. It manages to do what we do, and many people are intrigued by the results.

Are we just observing the results of our actions or did we just take one more small step towards the singularity?

I can "confirm" that double the ram is coming, they were handing out flyers at SXSW stating as such. Here is a photo I took in high resolution: http://code.mglinski.com/X3ps/30zoh6Yf Of course it is all still plans, but after talking with them directly about it I feel very confident they will be doing your ram junkies sweet justice once they have had the chance to move everyone over to the new E5 boxes.

They had a demo of Longview on the show floor too, from what I gathered it is a package install based daemon to monitor processes and the like, something like the server part of NewRelic but sitting directly in their datacenters.

I tried it and almost couldn't solve it because of the weird acceleration. If you are having this issue too, go into the dev console and change around the MS_BTW_UPD variable. I personally like MS_BTW_UP=18

Yea, as I read through the comments here I understood that was the idea. It's just I was expecting something more.... substantial to get "invited" to a hackathon, especially if you only know my email address and that I can construct valid HTTP requests in the language/program of my choice. For example, not including the jQuery library in the source code would have been better imo, so we would at least have to problem solve a little. Just my thoughts, I wish I could go to something like this but I can't so I am just complaining here instead :)

Eating pizza makes coding double hard for me, I should have had less then 3 mins for that puzzle, but I just don't think this was even remotely hard enough of a puzzle to weed out people for serious eCommerce development/hacking? Submit a few HTTP requests and you pass the tests? Besides filtering out people who don't know jQuery and console.log, I don't think this was a very good test/quiz for what they are looking for. I think they should be looking for the people who can create these simple puzzles from scratch in X time instead of the people who can solve them.

Also noticed the change to my invoice this morning when I went to evangelize this deal with my boss and co-workers. Not such a great deal IMO now that it's only 100k. Also the mention here that if I ever go over that number (now 100k down from 500k), my lifetime account is forfeit* ? Who do I need to contact to get a few questions answered?
