This Search API is focused on searching within IIIF content (think full text search of a book). There is currently a Discovery Working Group[1] looking at broader discovery of IIIF resources.
Hi, you should also look into checking to see if there is a MapTime http://maptime.io/ near you. MapTimes have sprung up all over the world and are a great way to learn about mapping and OSM.
I think they must be using sensor data from GMaps. Yesterday I mapped a ride that said mostly flat. It was not after riding it with Google Maps giving me directions while on the route. Today it shows an incline of 504ft. Same destination, same origin just two different days.
Not necessarily. OpenStreetMap relies on users to digitize features. Many of the OSM editors already include imagery from other providers. My guess would be digitizing from this imagery would not be much different and not worth the effort. The Landsat [1] program is another great contribution for imagery. Though lately programs like these have been in jeopardy with the congressional cut of everything science [2].
I would like to add that @mourner, Leaflet creator, gave a great talk last week in San Francisco about why he started Leaflet and how the open source community developed around it. Talk is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQAl43Aj_B0&feature=youtu.be).
One thing that I think is missing from this article is the communities around these projects and release cycles. Leaflet by far has the most active community around it. Where Open Layers 3 has been chugging along without a release for a while, and Google Maps API has remained pretty stagnant. A more powerful approach would be providing resources and tools for teachers and students to map their communities and places around the world. The map data becomes more robust, and students get a great opportunity to learn about new places and geography.
It's great to see these type of offerings that are coming out in the geospatial arena. CartoDB free web mapping course + Mapbox redesign and webapp, these new companies are really doing cool things!
So I have run into this same issue. We run summer research programs where users collect data with iPad's using Verizon service. When I went reactivate this year I had the same problems.
3 Verizon calls, 2 Apple Care calls, and 1 Verizon store visit later, I finally went to the Apple store where they happily gave me several unactivated SIM's. Unfortunately they gave me nano SIM's and I had to go back to get the micro SIM's.
The Apple in store employees seemed more than happy to help me out, yet the Verizon employees would only give me SIM cards if I activated a plan with them.
