As a liberal, I at least take pride in understanding that when I watch Steward/Colbert/Olbermann/Maddow, I'm watching partisan arguments. It's sad that many conservatives genuinely believe that Fox News is fair and balanced.
Which is why the 10K hour rule is absolute nonsense. It is meant to sell books by appealing to talentless individuals that make up the vast majority of the population. If you spend 10K hours playing tennis starting from childhood, you would not be a top pro. The only people who do that are those who already had talent and were successful at an early age based on that talent. That's the Outliers loophole. You can't find people without talent who spend 10K hours doing something, so therefore talent must not exist. If you can't understand this then there is just no hope for you. Outliers is simply a book to let losers feel better about themselves. That's all.
Bill Gates is an extremely talented individual. It took going through Math 50 at Harvard to tell him that they were actually people in the world markedly smarter than he. A lesser individual in Bill's circumstance would not have been able to do what he did. They would have learned to program and become a mediocre career software engineer somewhere, which is what I think the vast majority of this site's readers are. Sure, keep telling yourself you're just as talented as Gates. Pathetic.
How dare Yelp steal Foursquare's idea. Once somebody has an idea, nobody can ever try to do the same thing. EVER. Hopefully Foursquare has already patented their idea, so that nobody else will ever be able to let their users check in at specific locations and earn rewards for those check ins.
This actually seems really helpful. I can see variables saving me a lot of time. I hate going back to a sheet I haven't used in a while and not knowing what any of the colors are.
But I think it's silly to say that a tool to help you write better CSS will lead to the demise of CSS.
The slogan of the site should be 'marketingy'. You think people who are looking for advice on "how to climb to corporate ladder" wanna watch videos of entrepreneurs? Their slogan is much more exciting than "learn how to be a better boss".
I would even drop the 'is' and change it to "MeetTheBoss TV - where future leaders learn". That way "where future leaders learn" can be a standalone.
I hate software patents and don't think they should be issued at all, but the idea that "if, on the other hand, the troll was required to show the startup had some prior knowledge of their technology, the burden would be shifted to the attacker, and this blatant abuse would come to a grinding halt" flies in the face of what the patent system is intended to achieve.
"Patent" means open. When you file a patent for a new innovation, you disclose the underlying technology to the general public and open it for all to see. In exchange, you receive legal protection that nobody can use your innovation without your consent. It doesn't matter whether they stumble upon your technology completely independently. The technology is yours.
The alternative to disclosing your technology in a patent is to keep it a trade secret. You don't own the rights to the technology itself, so anybody who develops it independently will be able to be able to use it as well. However, other companies still cannot explicitly steal the innovation from you. This is how Coke has guard its formula for decades.
Just because multiple groups can arrive at the same innovation in a similar time-frame doesn't mean that that innovation was obvious. In fact, this has happened with many great innovations. The telephone and the integrated circuit are prime examples.
And how can you guys not understand the importance of patents to the development pharmaceuticals? A group cannot invest a billion dollars into the development of a compound without guarding it from competitors. Once these patents expire, generic companies are able to significantly undercut the creators. The generic makers are aided by the openness of the patent system, but this is not necessary to copy a medication. It's structure can be easily deduced, and even extremely complicated medications such as taxol have been synthesized using several different pathways.

Most Early Admissions programs are no longer binding. Students from families earning less than 100K no longer have to pay tuition at several top schools. Every school I was accepted to pretty much offered the same financial aid, which was inline with what FAFSA said my family should contribute. I have never heard of anybody admitted to a top school having to turn it down due to finances. There is plenty of aid (grants that you don't have to repay) for anybody who is not rich.
As for SAT tutoring, well for kids applying to top schools this will probably improve your M+V less than 100 points. If it's any more than that, you probably aren't top school material.
LOL. Pincus had the absolute worst speech at "Startup School". He didn't prepare anything and just meandered aimlessly from one thought to the next, rambling on about his life story. It was almost intolerable.
Anything that cites Outliers instantly loses credibility for me. Maybe his presentations became more visual throughout the decades because of the technology available.
Well according to Quantcast, this site now only gets 5.9K US visitors a month, so you might not need even 5K to have a decent site. At its peak HN got around 17.4K.
Showing the summary of the story is a REALLY good idea. It's also cool that it gets the summary for you, and you can change it if you want. The font is a bit cramped-together and small. It's pretty unpleasant to look at. What is your bounce rate? I think changing the font to make it initially more comfortable to look at might improve your bounce rate. I don't mean serif to sans-serif. Your font is so serify that it looks italicized. There are lots of lighter serif fonts.
Yup this is similar to the cool thing that Chegg introduced after years of just facilitating student-to-student exchanges. I used to just sell to students directly (and usually could come very close to covering initial purchase price), but after graduating I had to turn to Chegg to sell my books. Prices weren't nearly as good as they were with direct selling, but they were much better than what the bookstore would offer.
The HUGE advantage to selling on Chegg instead of Amazon is that Chegg gives you REAL MONEY (in the form of a prepaid debit card). Some functionality on their site could be improved, but the fact that they give REAL MONEY gives them a big edge.
