I've come across a few other startups that got started this way, but from this research it was interesting to see that wasn't big for any of the biggest consumer apps.
Since you've got a SaaS product, (hopefully) you'll be happy to hear I'm doing a follow-up looking at how the fastest growing SaaS companies got started.

I appreciate the feedback. That is where a lot of our energy is going right now, fostering the intrinsic motivation and making it as easy (and fun) as possible to answer. I think there's enough precedent (e.g. Stack Overflow, Quora, Aardvark, etc.) to be confident this can work.
It's really interesting, the word serendipity keeps coming up around this concept. I'm giving a talk at TEDxConcordia later this month titled "Losing Serendipity", though it has nothing to do with Localmind. Certainly gives me more fodder for the talk.
