A good first read of Ulysses can be done via the librivox version of this book. At first blush the beginning chapters seem amateurishly read, however you soon realize that this was done on purpose in keeping with the tone of the work. Once you are in on the joke, you can see how this haphazard narrative adds to the experience.

This looks like a Swiss Army-knife of "Social Media" functions which, by the way, happens to have a web browser attached. As computing is slowly moving to the pocket, I see discrete cooperative components as more of a solution than an uber desktop umbrella with tiny embedded dedicated functions. But take my opinion with a grain of salt since I actively limit my "Social Media" foot print.

OK I have been in this business since the late 70s. There did not exist CS degrees back then. Managers in their zeal to convert people from diverse disciplines into programmers devised tests to ascertain that the could think logically.

Some of the best programmers I have encountered in my carrier started out as Zoologists, Philosophy majors, some English Lit Majors, etc. etc. These people were able to make complex systems run an very limited hardware because the emphasis back then was to "Do the most with the least". Please see some of the early Unix tools for proof of concept.

As time went by, schools started to turn the crank and started to generate CS degrees. While this is good to a large extent, it has lead to an increase in specialization which in my opinion is detrimental to the industry overall.

The adage "When life gives you a hammer you tend to look at all problems as if they were nails" is an apt one, and is illustrated by the advancement of theory over function ( please look as most Industry Popular OSs for proof of concept ).

No longer are engineers required to "Do the most from the least", They are conditioned to build in obsolescence in their code by requiring that the users buy better hardware in order to accommodate the grandiose theoretical marvels.

The type of question that I have asked of the most successful programmers in the projects I have managed are simple direct questions that probe the individual's ability to deal logically with problems. Than explore their depth of understanding as far as the consequences of the decisions they make.

I have worked with far too many engineers that look for esoterica where simplicity is sufficient, and mistake density for elegance.

Why would this be news, it is not too difficult to achieve. I have been using "Cycorder" http://cydia.saurik.com/info/cycorder/ on my iPhone for months now and it works flawlessly. The only gotcha is that you have to have a jailbroken iPhone, and use cydia to install it but the video quality and sound quality are fine. If as the article suggests, this is a software only upgrade it is not a big deal. The article talks about doing video editing on the iPhone itself which I don't think is practical. It would be news if the next version of the iPhone had a real hi-def camera to allow to acquire HD video, however I doubt that this is apple horizon any time soon.

Why not put your supposed intellectual superiority in critiquing the poor design that makes this possible rather than trying to impress us with how neat and clean we could make the iceberg that is about to sink the titanic?

I personally do not see the attraction (I also do not use Apple TV, I use HP MediaSmart TV). Although Boxee is billed as a media server, and perhaps that was its role when it was called XBMC, it currently is mostly a media aggregator. Perhaps the infatuation with all things apple ( fueled in part by the Jesus phone), has gotten everybody enthused but to be a genuine cross platform media aggregator/server it must be able to stream internet content. In its current incarnation Boxee uPnP server comes in disabled, and even after you enable it, you quickly realize that it will not stream Hulu, Netflix, wb, cc, cbs. I can see how, when running in an Apple-TV aggregating media there, it can be appealing but until it can be used as an streaming server streaming all media (including Hulu, Netflix, ..., etc ) it is not even as good as Miro.

Virtualization has come to mean the running of a virtual machine in a physical one and on that virtual machine running your OS of choice. However vietualization should be thought of a much more than that. Think of storage virtualization for instance. Here we have the opportunity of creating an unending variety of storage options (Stripping, Mirroring, migration, automatic backups, etc) that can happen transparently. Imagine Never having to worry about your data stability because of virtual storage. How about virtual device access? Nothing says that USBs could not be front ended and encapsulated by an virtualization application that can then broker that information to and external host ( even a virtual one). The field is very wide, to me the promise is in creating an abstract device with transparent access to a myriad of services (both virtual an physical).
