I appear to be a dying breed. A young ( < 30 years old ) programmer, self taught, who loves classic, "mainstream" languages like C, C++, Java...
Why?
Types.
I cannot stand the road that new languages are on, abandoning the type system, or making it optional, or not explicit. Given that I appear to be a minority, I thank you for reading my rant... Have a good day :(
I never claimed guaranteed high returns. An annuity doesn't guarantee you "high" monthly income. It guarantees you AN monthly income.
My comment was to address the question regarding why more people don't use annuities, and I'm not sure your response counters that.
Regarding GM, yes, I'm aware they went bankrupt. But correct me if I'm wrong - Investors didn't lose their shares? The government bailed them out, and they're operational today. That's what I mean by "too big to fail".
I'd like to put forward another possible reason why someone might opt to not get an annuity...
If you are financially savvy, or can pay someone else to be, does it not make more sense to invest your money yourself? There are a number of "too big to fail" companies, like GM, and Wells Fargo, that offer dividends. If you composed a portfolio of high dividend, stable, stocks... Could you theoretically have a "guaranteed" monthly income AND the ability to liquidate, in the event of an emergency?
I think you need to bring a request like that to the table, early in the hiring process. And whether or not they "throw your resume in the bin" will depend on how you frame the question.
- "Are you guys open to the idea of a lower salary, in favor of an extra day off? I'd love to work on my wood working, and spend time with my kids... Time is more valuable than money right now".
v.s.
- "I'll take that salary, and I want an extra day off every week."
For what it's worth, I have ADHD, and when I take adderal it has a profound mellowing, and calming effect.
I don't take it in the morning for that reason. Because it has zero stimulation / awakeness effect on me, I wait to use it in the afternoon, when sleep inertia has fully dissipated.
Some intense exercise (7+ mile runs) will wipe you out. I'd recommend you keep the coffee, and get your body moving. Allocate 1 hour of your day, to 120+ bpm workouts.
How does WP know it's not the other way around? It could be it's all the people who voted to stay...
