At Nest they were (at least then) focused on how things looked. Nobody cared about how it worked, or how the product should be supported after shipping. Anyways, no regrets.

The quality went down the drain. The management was terrifyingly dictatorial, top-down. Everyone was preparing for a Tony presentation/demo. They were afraid like kids do of the cruel headmaster.
My partners and I created a startup during the last severe downturn. It was indeed the best time since resources ended up being cheaper for us and we got a longer runway. We ended up never needed to raise capital and had our exit in 2012.
