I'm honestly curious, was it ever useful, or is it just an expression?
I'm a non native english speaker trying to read this book, sort of gave it up around (i think) half to read other books in the waiting list. Most of the interludes are not that engaging to me (whale classification chapter comes to mind), which is a pity since I enjoyed the actual narrative.
I've been doing some spare chess programming on a GUI myself (non-intensive on-off work for 1 year so far) and I decided to stay with the naive method (12 bits, straightforward src and dest squares) for compressing moves. It's obviously easier and faster to implement, I'm not hostage for some wacky bugs I could have done, and it's straightforward to parse and to format to long algebraic form (e2e4), which is the format UCI likes to receive (stockfish, for instance) and to store to a file.
Having said that, I might take a look into this 8 bit format :)
Check opendylan [1], which blends dynamic typing with optional type annotations [2]. There's a paper [3] and a "dead" branch in github [4] with an actual implementation of gradual typing.
Minisat is definitely on my read list; I'll probably need to read it 2/3 times to fully appreciate it's content. Thanks for the "superoptimizer" pointer, I'll explore that.
How are you handling libc? you have your own (or is this even an issue with Lua)? I've been thinking of putting a Common Lisp implementation on bare metal (initially thinking of SBCL, but I think MKCL may be a easier challenge), but haven't found the time to start yet.
This is great news, now we just need to lobby for the creation of this specification in machine readable files, using something like the K Framework, instead of using the usual wall of text.
Personally I would be a lot more interested in a good platform for writing static analysis tools. I believe the community in general would take a more immediate benefit (and what a benefit!...) from this than from a lone PHP to Go transpiler.
