There are several dark pools of concentrated yet totally unexplained and even implausible coronavirus being detected, with no clear discernible path from China. It leads me to wonder if the virus is a lot more long lived on surfaces or maybe in foods or on food packaging that came from China. How else to relatively cut off towns get an infection, but cities are not? Is there something that towns got from China that these cities may not have? Food stuff? agricultural supplies? Produce? … I am open to suggestions.
We have people who have never been and have no contact with anyone who has been to China, been in the vicinity of Chinese (e.g., tourist centers chocked full of Chinese tourists), or are Chinese; developing infections with Coronavirus. I am more than open to other suggestions and theories, but small towns in remote areas of Italy that have very little if any direct contact with the rest of the country, let alone China, especially over winter, seems quite peculiar; unless we simply have not identified (or officials are keeping secret) a far larger outbreak in cities.
And please don't try to tell me that western governments would not keep secrets or be dishonest. We are all adults and smart here, let's act like it.
As someone in management, I will somewhat agree that management too often deflects from their ownership and responsibility, but what you are saying is also a form of deflection, unless you also espouse a kind of paternalistic oversight over architects/engineers that would absolve them of responsibility by simply being mindless executors of management's commands and lead. I suspect that is not something most here would support.
There needs to be a balance, each party needs to play their own role and work in unison. As much as managers need to manage things and largely clear the way for architects and engineers, architects and engineers need to perform their job and role, to which I would argue belongs adhering to industry standards for security as a core aspect.
If there was clear pressure or even overriding of architects/engineers insisting on adhering to standards by managers who were not performing their role of advocating on behalf of or negotiating with architects/engineers, and instead were even sabotaging them and their product, then sure, it's a management failure; but at that point, architects/and engineers should have also even out right refused and revolted against managers or at the very least clearly and expressly voiced their vehement opposition.
As a manager, I would have even stuck my neck out and sided with an architect and engineer rebellion if they were pressured or even asked to sacrifice core requirements. I also understand though that not all organizations have managers that would do that, especially in careerist organizations where managers see people as bodies to pile up to climb the ladder faster.
This is a bit tangential to the topic, but I find it immensely more interesting that after literal decades of utterly egregious abuses and downright evil behavior by PayPal, people still seem to be surprised by this type of behavior.
I find it so fascinating because it is a kind of manifestation of what is clearly a kind of mentality of abused people, the kind of people who usually others see as being trapped in a kind of inability to internalize the abuse being perpetrated against them, and therefore rationalize, excuse, ignore, etc. to simply push away and hide and suppress the clear abuses happening to them. It's just as sad as it is interesting to me because of the inherent illogical puzzle it represents, a puzzle that clearly has not yet been solved or for which there exists no easy and clean solution. How do you get someone out of an abusive relationship, be it a personal relationship or something like a formalized cult?
We are all abused by PayPal and other tech companies on a constant basis, yet all we do is lament the treatment, while simply just continuing on in the abusive relationship. Someone should tell PayPal, etc. "no, you are not allowed to abuse us anymore. We have human rights and your lies, deceit, abuse, manipulation, gaslighting, monopolization, etc are not going to be tolerated anymore." But I guess our other abusers in Congress get too much money and free meals out of it to change that.
I don't understand your line of thinking. You consider taking money against the will of someone who worked for what they have, in order to give it to others, a "strong ethical underpinning"? That sounds like theft or robbery by proxy, like the reverse of Robin Hood; the King taking from the peasants in order to give it to the court subjects. That does not strike me as ethical at all, unless you are talking about a voluntary program where, e.g., you get to sign up to have, e.g., 2% extra tax take out that is then used to pay for things like UBI.
Is that what you are talking about, a voluntary thing? I am all for a new form of government of voluntary "a la carte" democracy, where, e.g., if you want "free" healthcare, you can sign up to be taxed for it, or if you want "free" education, you can sign up to be taxed for that, or if you want to "help" the homeless (which I do) you can sign up to be taxed in order to "help" that too. By all means, you want to fund the CA UBI, you should demand to sign up for that, maybe through your employer or when you file your tax return every year.
Anything but voluntary payment of taxes for anything outside of the core functions of government is actually the opposite of strong ethical underpinnings; it's objectively immensely immoral and unethical, no different than other forms of theft and slavery.
