The only reason to hire the majority of that IT "talent" was the cheaper rates, not some outstanding brilliant achievments or skills. I think the guy is lobbying the interests of those bodyshops, that make tons of money selling developers from other countries. Also how many H1B holders actually get "postgraduate US education"? Not so many, I am afraid.
I think in a typical firm very few people would refuse to give their passwords... most of us would give it with a "sure, no problems, you are welcome" smile :)
Never do unknown amount of work for a fixed amount of money. Forget about "good guys" and "friends". You either charge them per hour or (if fixed job) control the contract with detailed requirements. You deliver that - you get paid. Charge per milestone. Split new features/changed requirements and your bugs. Charge more for new features. Always emphasize the fact it is not a bug, even if you are willing to do it for free. NEVER do life-time free maintenance of the project - set and meet the deadlines.
ALWAYS CHARGE.
People who can not organize and manage the process of development properly are deserved to be charged to the maximum extent.

Seriously, I think its a matter of personal preferences.I am using my dell/vista 10-14 hours a day, restart maybe once a week/fortnight and have problems once in a while,
But hey, I am a developer myself, I know the process of software development too well to complain about anything sofware/hardware related. It's just the way it is.
And I think it's a bit lame to expect something that guarantees you flowless experience whatever you do. A computer is a bit more complex than a calculator. It gives you more power and more freedom and eventually more ways to break things.
Nowadays a good developer on a contract can earn more than his full-time manager. And less stress, and less responsibilities, and also different projects and different people. Yes, some corps do not treat contractors well, so, well - look for another contract.
Management? Only for really good money and interesting project with people I love to work with.

Capitalism happens when the factors of production (land/capital) can be private, not necesserily owned by the goverment, "business" or "customer" are really irrelevant to the economic system :)
I think that the reason in "Users were very aggressive in reducing their user counts, and our average selling price became very small - less than $10/month" is that I think their average account (like mine) wouldn't benefit from using the service at any price above ~10-15 dollars. Most of software they provide is free, hosting is cheap, I don't see any value to upgrade/pay more at that point. At a price above 20 bucks with more than 10 users, I would switch to a VPS/dedicated server (30-70 bucks) or a internal server, which is also a good investment.

I reckon people who buy SUN hardware will never-ever run their app on GAE for too many reason.
I do agree however there is nothing wrong in omitting core classes, I think SUN started it with idea of lightweight client java a while ago :) And such an initiative should really have come from SUN many years ago, giving java developers cheap hosting.
