Scour code that you find interesting and write a piece of software.
The best advice I was ever given was to think small and in terms of "pieces" or "parts" of a program as a whole. Write something that doesn't do anything, well...for lack of a better term..."useful".
Don't think too grand when you're just getting started, though. That's not to say don't dive right in, but take it simply at first. A few lines at a time.
