I've always found strange all the talk about using cannabis to manage pain.
I've smoked alot of weed, well before all those talks promoting THC for this.
It was my experience, and common knowledge in my circles at the time that THC made pain way, way worse, at least in resin form.
Probably simply because you'll tend to isolate things and focus on them very strongly when under the influence, it makes you notice pain more. I remember toking some days after a knee surgery and regretting badly having done it. So much pain I hadn't noticed...
Just love lazygit, makes me happy every time I use it, which is every like every 5 minutes. Love how extensible it is with custom actions. Love the recent integration of update-refs. Thank you, happy new job and congrats !
I've switched from tmux to zellij about 2 monthes, ago, it may have less features than tmux for now but it certainly does all i need, in most case better than tmux. It is much more user friendly and usable imo.
Frankly i've spent too much time in the past fiddling with complex confs and tools which expect the user to spent days figuring out a conf which work for them. Then if you don't use the tool for 1 month, or simply don't edit the conf for a big while you've forgotten half of it.
Zellij has a conf file, it took me a bit of time to tweak it at first, but i know I can understand it in a pinch. Same thing for actually using it, it's mostly discoverable.
And most importantly, it is very clear that simplicity and predictability are big priorities. It shows everywhere in the project, I totally vouch this approach and tend to do the same thing on my work projects. I know from experience than understanding your user's needs and getting out of your way to make their life easy by not having to think about how the implementation is done is really much harder that just making a tool configurable and extensible...
Never used a BBC but 8bit computers of this era often used cassettes to load and save data.
The tape would contain bleeps and blurps which would be decoded into bytes by the computer. EG this is the sound produced by an Amstrad cpc464 loading a game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvChkOHgDIo
This meant that to copy software you didn't even need a computer, just a double cassette deck.
And that by recording the credits of this BBC show to tape and playing that back into the computer you'd load some program. That's actually a brilliant idea, I wonder what kind of software they broadcasted.
Imo the belief in rebirth is not needed to practice metta, you just need to realize that every being wants to be happy, just like you.
Yet all of them are mired in delusion and most of the time do things which go the opposite way of generating real happiness, we all do.
Everyone is mired in delusion and most of the time react to feelings of anger and craving (vedana), which are generated based on their history, social norms and whatnot. They are just being manipulated by those all the time, unless they're very mindful of what's happening in their mind temporarily. Realizing this you can't really hate anybody, and in fact you realize they are 100% like you.
I believe since Maharshi was a practitioner of hinduism for him "the self" (what they call Atman) was to be seen in all things, and the same everywhere.
So anything transient cannot be the self, hence is an illusion, or false.
Psychotherapy works on the "self": your problems, your history.
One of the aims of mediation is to gradually understand that this self is really an illusion, hence there are in fact no problems and no history. Past does not really define who you are, and problems are only problems if you think reality should be different that what it currently is the moment you experience it (which is of course totally impossible. What you can do is alter the future though.)
Now don't get me wrong this self is in fact a very useful interface for interacting with others, etc.
The problem is believing this interface, or layer we add on top on experiences really is us, while it's really just a useful concept to navigate the world.
We are all mostly a bunch of habits: this stimuli gives this response because we trained our mind to function this way, were raised that way, live within country X, etc. It's all just mind formatting.
Meditation aims to discover this for yourself, which should leads you to train in developing new, more wholesome habits, which will make you and others suffer less. Then since you are mostly habits, you gradually change, and become much saner as times goes by. Saner because you're living more in adequation with reality.
So in a way, psychotherapy can be seen as a dead end for someone who practices meditation.
Although it certainly has its uses, even for very advanced meditators who can also develop blind spots without seeing them (more work needed, but psychotherapy can be a useful mirror there).
Basically what he did what read about the "insight knownledges", (which are initially described in the Visuddhimagga, in a very loose way), and interpret them in whatever ways he sees fit, then proceed to see his, and everyone's life through the lens of that. He even diagnose everyone like an MD on his forums. (And incidentally, he /is/ a MD.)
You hear a dog bark and feel afraid ? Do you do meditation ? yes ? Surely you must be in a Bhaya ñana phase, and are on your way to enlightenment. Because bhaya = fear. Did you already experience that a few years ago ? did you go through this and that extremely loosely defined stages ? Then surely you are already a Sotāpanna and are headed to the attainment of once-returner.
Based on this he is an Arahant (because he says he cycled the insight knownledges 4 times).
But being an Arahat basically means being free of ill will, desire of the senses, and of a sense of self-existent self (and other things). It does not mean "just go though those phases, and that's it, that's his own reduction of the path to a few pages in the Visuddhimagga, which i would not even consider canonical personally.
> Are you basing this purely on reading about supposedly enlightened people getting angry or grumpy? That's a surprisingly common thing, actually.
People believing they are enlightened are common in some circles, yes, and it's always a red flag imo.
Yes, an Arhat does not get angry, that's in the very definition of the term: ill will has been totally eliminated. You cannot say you are an Arahat but you get angry, it would just mean you are something else than an Arhat, by definition.
Daniel Ingram is a deluded fool, and imo being this deluded probably means a sort of mental disorder.
His book and system just show how far away from any real form of enlightenment he is. Sadly because he sounds modern & a little scientific people keep taking him seriously. No, the Vipassana nanas are not what he describes. Anyone wondering about him should just forget this stuff, burn this book and go to a retreat with a well known teacher.
I stopped using Linux on the desktop before tiling WMs were a thing, and was kinda fascinated by what i read about them, as i've always seen the overlapping windows GUI idea as somewhat broken. (what's the use of a window if it's even partially hidden, appart from clutter ??)
Well those 2 projets really bring tiling to osx, not just as in "resize windows with a shortcut" like spectacles, etc, but as the real i3/xmonad deal : windows are mostly managed for you, using a BSP for kwm.
I use kwm, it's beta quality, it has a few issues and i spent a few evenings tinkering to wrap my head about the concepts but ... it works, and it rocks !
Suddenly I can have 10 usable windows on my dual screen setup, focus follow mouse, etc. It feels so much peaceful having everything on your screen that being searching for windows all the time...
This is a very bad move for Amazon on all levels, i'm pretty sure this will be cancelled and some heads will fly.
I mean :
- They piss their customers
- They piss their merchants, probably killing some businesses along the way
- They instill fear in their potential merchants. I was vaguely thinking about selling stuff on amazon mind you, and worried a bit about being locked in. Well, those fears are much more real now.
- They piss google and apple, obviously. They're competitors of course but it's a bit of a harsh move, in fact it looks like a war declaration.
- They have a very special place as the biggest merchant on the internet, people watch them and some fear for good reason what they could become (like the only e commerce platform on the internet), and what it could mean in term of market manipulation opportunities. Well they just gave those guys lots of cookies.
Except they're also a marketplace and they require their vendors to ban the same products.
It's not an ecommerce strategy, they're very clearly using their huge leverage as the #1 ecommerce on the internet to attack their competitors and lure customers into their walled garden.
I'm pretty sure in my country this will be forbidden by antitrust laws.
It was my experience, and common knowledge in my circles at the time that THC made pain way, way worse, at least in resin form.
