I'm in the same situation. I also don't want to peghole myself as a small company start-up guy. I'd like the experience of working in a large corporate, and also to surround myself in smarter people and learn and teach a tonne.
I was working at a mapping startup that was almost hired away to Google in 2006 (cofounder depthcharged that opportunity) and have applied a few times since, never to get a reply email. Was recently recommended to a recruiter by another googler (in munich this time) and I'm putting together a more in-depth CV.
As a javascript developer, the UI inconsistencies at maps.google.com really piss me off, I'd like to have the chance to fix them.
there are plenty of DIY laser scanners that give much better results than anything you could do with an iphone alone. laser, line splitting lens, turntable, hi-resolution webcam, done.
