If I want to download a single file, I just use wget and paste the URL in my Putty window.
If you want something better than curl and wget, try Mulk. It's based on libcurl, does parallel downloading, parses html, does recursive fetching like wget and more. Check it out:
Is it compete.com, consumerinput.com or both that you are querying each page view?
AFAIK, you can just query the Compete API (http://developer.compete.com/). I haven't seen anything that says you have to query both. ConsumerInput seems to be the brand Compete uses to recruit users and software developers to cut out the middlemen like ISPs. I guess you are trying to get some extra money, which is fine just make sure the users know next time.
My desktop is actually less powerful than my laptop (excluding the graphics card). I can do everything the desktop does with it, plus I can carry it with me in far-away countries.
You can use miracle fruit (or miracle berry) to make sour/bitter things taste sweet. It binds to your tastebuds for about half an hour, during which sour things will taste quite sweet. You could suck on a lemon and it will feel like sweet lemonade. It's a good way to cut down on sugar.
You could say our current situation is a bit like a game. We have silly achievements: world/country/whatever records (think Guinness World Records). You could say money is "points" which can be redeemed in various ways and merely having a lot of them is an end unto itself. And so on...
I don't want to use a separate app for to-do lists, so I either use whatever text editor is at hand or Wikidpad. It's also a great way to stop using dozens of text files scattered around your filesystem for notes/lists/etc.
Wikidpad also has some to-do-list specific plugins/scripts, which might be handy but I don't use any of them.
Since the CustomizeGoogle extension is no longer updated, I suggest trying the new OptimizeGoogle extension that has taken over the former's responsibilities.
It really is one of my favourites. You can filter URLs from the results. Flushes the Google cookie but remembers my settings. I recommend it to everyone that uses Google.

Regarding addiction, I'll answer with a quote, replace X with the vice of your choice:
"Is X addictive? Yes, in the sense that most of the really pleasant things in life are worth endlessly repeating."
Harder and harder material? Please no more "gateway" theories. As for acting out what we see on the screen, what's wrong with getting a little inspiration, I am not going to suddenly start hitting my partner just because I saw a pornstar do it.
