The obesity examples fails because obesity is non-contagious. The issue with COVID is that not getting vaccinated puts your coworkers even more at risk in an environment where you're already much more likely to be infected.
Additionally, in health care you're often working with patients who have comorbidities, for these patients, contracting COVID from a healthcare worker could be a death sentence.
Because France doesn't need to care about China but they do need to care about Russia, and they don't have the ability to counterbalance Russia without the US. This is part of why their nationalist movement to rebuilt their military is growing strength, but they're far from being capable of being independent from the US.
I had a similar experience to you. I'm trying to be forgiving however, because COVID brought a lot of depression, and people going through depression are inwardly focused and can struggle to maintain relationships. As their friend, I want to be there for them when they're able to focus on us again.

The debunker doesn't address the fact that in addition to the FLIR-lock, there was multiple visual and radar confirmations.
There's the possibility that the USG believes the dollar's primacy is going to come to an end in the relatively near future. There are other factors at play that could weaken the dollar's status that matter more than sanctions, including:
(1) The geopolitical shift away from a unipolar world, with the rise of states such as China.
(2) The upcoming end of the petrodollar, as nations shift to renewable energy.
If you believe the reign of the dollar will come to an end anyways, you might as well use its power while you have it and throw sanctions around to weaken your rivals.
