There are a couple of CS programs, especially community colleges, where they actively ask for folks with industry experience to mentor students.
There are also boot camp programs that do the same. In particular, I have mentored at Hackbright Academy, and I only have great things to say about the experience. I am pretty sure that I get more out of the experience of mentoring the students than they do :)

As for fostering the culture, part of it is that we perform post-mortems on all outages and measure the customer impact. Many of our problems do not have textbook answers, so the post-mortems become a cave diving exercise to find the answer. The success of this will depend heavily on the people doing the parsing of applications and matching them to the right company. While I like the idea of lowering the barrier for applying for jobs, I cannot help but think that many students will look at this as another opportunity to focus on quantity of applications they send out. Instead, I would rather that students take some time to research and figure out on their own what they want for an internship, rather than just sending out a bunch of applications/resumes.
Another way to combat this is make it easier for people to publish data that goes against their hypothesis and still give them 'points' for it. Part of the problem in academic labs is that there is this race to publish papers to get more funding to publish more papers to get more funding and so on. If journals stopped treating data that goes against an initial hypothesis as 'bad data' there would be a incentive to still publish it, and ideally, prevent someone else from repeating the same experiment/hypothesis.
I really look forward to the day when we can rely more on implicit data from users for this kind of automation. I think it will start with purpose built devices (eg Wakemate), but then evolve into more sophisticated platform type devices ready for anyone's code.
That's not uncommon, assuming that an initial phone screen counts as an interview.
I have had stretches where it took me talking to ~80 candidates between initial phone screens, random chats, etc over two months before finding someone to hire.
And to be clear, I am not claiming that I found the 'best' person out of 80 people. 'Best' is a very custom definition depending on the environment, role, and fit.
Email is meant for asynchronous communication (or at least it is supposed to be).
Any immediate alerting that relies on email communication is broken. You should not be constantly having to watch your inbox simply to be parsing messages to figure out what alerts are meaningful. Let the machines do that work for you by setting up and constantly refining your alerts correctly.
My team at Netflix is looking for Site Reliability Engineers to come in and help solve our availability and reliability challenges. We have one of the largest AWS footprints out there and are constantly finding out about the limits of AWS technologies.
We have a unique problem that we want to figure out how to enable all of our engineering teams to deploy faster and more often, while still increasing the overall availability of the Netflix streaming service. We do this by building tools/services for engineering teams and by helping teams figure out ways to make their software more reliable.
