IBM’s Selectric line of typewriters were quite popular in the 1960s, thanks in part to an innovation called the typeball which allowed for easy font changes on a single machine. Unfortunately, as if often the case when specialized components are involved, it’s an idea that hasn’t aged particularly well. The Selectric typewriters are now around 60 years old and since IBM isn’t making replacement parts, those restoring these machines have had to get somewhat creative like using a 3D printer to build new typeballs.
OP and I have different experiences here. I'm very satisfied with iOS 11, with one significant exception: my iPad mini 2 is very slow. But it's nearly five years old so I think that's just the way the tech industry works.
Just having a client in the mobile space wouldn't have done it. It's more than that. SL was made for a world in which the desktop computer was people's primary computer. Now, smartphones and tablets are people's primary computers, and SL doesn't adapt well to that experience.
You're right about MMOs. But what's missing there is the opportunity to do anything or many things. In an MMO, you can only do one thing -- play the game. And that's fine, and millions of people are happy doing just that. But it's not a general-purpose tool.
