Um, could something similar to this be done with better hardware to achieve better results at a slightly higher price point?
1000 fps on a 560p or 1080p res for a few hundred dollas would be huge... compared to Red/Phantom/name extremely expensive cameras...
O(*) complexity doesn’t mean that the computer will perform exactly that amount of operations – it means that as n approaches infinity the algorithm will do at most that much operations – ignoring constant factors and lower order terms.
This is an important distinction to make because some constant factors are so large that using an algorithm with better complexity class doesn’t make sense – a typical example is matrix multiplication – we know of an algorithms in O(n^2.3728639) complexity class [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coppersmith–Winograd_algorithm] but the constant factors make it prohibitive to use and we use the “much worse” O(n^2.807) algorithm [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strassen_algorithm]
There’s one background note I read once, about the filming of the crowd scenes. In Tunisia, where the extras were the local people. Who did not speak English.
So that when the soundtrack of a crowd scene says “we are all individuals”, watch the mouths of the extras. Not saying that in English, I’d suggest.
I don't know why, but I find it amusing that people are so attached to their macbooks that they will even carry around full sized keyboards to replace the garbage keyboards on them instead of just buying a better laptop with a usable keyboard.
Wow, great and sad article. I was born and raised in Baltimore. I went to OLGC, FSK 76 and Southern High. I knew pretty early on, after having had the opportunity to visit some other places, that I had to get out of Baltimore - not so much for the crime at the time - but for job opportunities. Otherwise I would be one of those guys I grew up around who graduate high school, get a job, buy a row house, get married, have a couple of kids, and stay put. That was not for me. Thankfully I joined the service out of high school and left. I actually got stationed in Baltimore but lived in the county. My family remained in Baltimore. While growing up, I lived through the 68 riots as well as the inner harbor revitalization. I used to, as part of my job in high school, go downtown to do deliveries and pick-ups (walking). Despite the new buildings going up, as mentioned in the article, if you went a couple of blocks either way, it was a completely different story. I heard a description once (I believe it was about London) that I always thought was appropriate for the Baltimore "renaissance": Like wearing a tuxedo over dirty underwear. I have not been back to Baltimore in years, and since my parents and siblings are gone there is no reason to ever go back. And with a crime rate like that, why would I? Why would anyone?
In the light of OGH's administrative comment, I agree, except that I don't mind the plot reawakening or taking a new direction. What I dislike is books that don't have an adequate closure, because I find them aesthetically unsatisfactory and dislike being manipulated - at least so blatantly. That doesn't apply to single stories published in multiple volumes (like the Lord of the Rings), of course. But I accept that writing the whole of such things before any publication is a huge investment of a writer's time, with an uncertain return, so this is not a condemnation - merely a statement of MY choice in what I will buy.
One thing that I alluded to before the thread got diverted is that I don't know how many people are like you and me, and how many are quite happy with the lack of closure. That obviously affects an author's commercial reality!
