There is/was some interesting data crunching critical to the plot here. Lewis actually walks through the role some hackers played in fleshing out the multiple abuses HFT enables. A 10,000 word excerpt from the book detailing this was published in the NY Times yesterday, but never got very far on HN because the title (was somewhat obscure). Anyways its worth checking out.
