Ask HN: Should Microsoft rename Internet Explorer?
The truth is the modern versions of IE are actually great browsers. However, call them ghosts of atrocities past, there is still a stigma attached to the name "Internet Explorer" and cleansing it is going to be impossible. Do you not think it would be in Microsoft's best interest to change the name. IE is the butt of many jokes today.

Yes, but the jokes aren't about the browser's name, they're about the browser. Changing a name has less significance than you seem to think.

Citation needed. MSIE is still the least standards-compliant browser among available browsers. It's still a PITA for Web development, that developers must accommodate in all sorts of complex ways to keep it from spoiling their pages' appearance and function.
Here's my counter-proposal -- let's change the name of Microsoft's browser, while simultaneously flushing it down the nearest toilet. That would work.
