Now only if AWS supported upgrading from MySQL 5.1.X to anything 5.5 or above, this and many other benefits could be realized by a lot of companies out there.

AWS hosts servers, and you can upgrade your MySQL instance without their approval as far as I am aware.

Only if you're running your own MySQL server. If you're using RDS, you're stuck with what the version they set up.
