We've been trying to detect dark matter for so long now I wonder if we're just thinking about it in the wrong way.
Yeah check out MOND and RelMOND. There have been some breakthroughs on the front of revising the actual theories that seem promising. The grand consensus is that it's unlikely but I've always thought it's less likely that some made up matter that we can't detect in any way makes up 95% of the universe. When it comes to dark matter/energy it seems like everyone's thrown Occam's razor out of the window.
Only time and observed events will tell which one fits more though. You either have a simple theory that doesn't check out for all cases and makes up invisible things to fit or one that does work but is probably overfit on current data.
