Software engineering interviews are busted as hell (although, to be fair, probably not substantially moreso than other industries).

What slays me with Google in particular was they did this study a while back that found that whiteboard coding was nonsense, and then they... kept doing it. Although I'm having a hard time finding it now, so maybe I'm mistaken there.

It definitely is more busted than other industries.

You'll never see an electrical engineer get asked to solve a circuit problem on a whiteboard.

I think this can be fine, though. It's like in the rest of life. If people are honest about who they are, they tend to attract people like them, and push away people who aren't like them. In this way, you don't end up working for people you don't like.

Google will end up staffed mostly by comp sci college grads (as well as a significant number of non-technical people) who believe somehow that if they just focus on things that sound technically superior, one day they will build a good product that won't need to be shuttered. And this will continue for as long as their ad money doesn't run out.
