We are quickly reaching the point of no return because of the fear overshoot. We don't JUST have a virus problem, global financial markets are seizing up.
They should not have closed bars, restaurants, Vegas, etc. It was a panic move that just puts tens of thousands of people out of work.
I'm not even concerned with my losses now, I'm now concerned with the dollar itself. We need people going to work and doing the important things they do and that requires they get paid with dollars that have some kind of intrinsic value/buying power. If we hyper-inflate, people will just say "fuck it" and not go to work. You can't pay bills with worthless money. We're headed into "worthless money" really fast here, though.
So what's your plan? Socialized medicine? I mean, it's working out so great for those Chinese folks, right?
Making everyone else pay for you is no better of a solution, it's just shifting the costs around someplace else, which honestly is selfish of you to decide how I should deploy my ever-dwindling supply of cash reserves. I have two kids to put through college but Bernie and all his Democrat pals want to confiscate as much of my money as possible to pay for someone else's stuff, probably the 20 million illegals who showed up here unannounced, or maybe just swindle the money the way Democrats have done for DECADES.
It's coming to the point where guys like me might as well take up arms against people like YOU and just put and end to it. Get my drift?
Good luck losing your ass shorting stocks! Shorting requires very accurate timing and even if the trend is your friend, it simply is not the opposite of going long. It just isn't.
I only get two posts every 4 hrs because HN thinks I'm an asshole, but since I'm a rich asshole, I'll break it down for you:
I'd say most of us probably are. I am suffering from chronic overwork at this point. I'm thinking of just quitting and taking 6 mos. off and maybe never going back to tech at all. Dow 30 company, total fucking mess.
Several major things bother me and junk science isn't even in my top 3.
1) Big shots don't get indicted at all. We have a 2-tier system of justice where only "little people" are hanging out in the breeze. The real law breakers are tolerated and even encouraged. When Barr, when?
2) Crimes such as voter fraud are set at the lowest possible priority and given to junior prosecutors who are expected to fuck up the cases so they get dropped. Thus, voter fraud is never aggressively pursued and it's joked about (I know this second hand because a close relative is a prosecutor). Voter fraud is a massive problem in the US, massive, and yet the fake statistics indicate the exact opposite.
3) People committing serious felonies are back on the street in record time because "muh racism," able to continue their crime waves (see: NY). If the system isn't going to take serious crimes seriously, then let's repeal all those laws and just get on with the anarchy so we can at least put down the worst individuals ourselves. If the system won't function, someone else will take care of it.
Highly intelligent, but partner choice is what cemented our wealth. I'm not sure being super smart is anything but a liability, honestly. I had terrible social anxiety for most of my youth and into my 20s. I managed to mostly break out of it by recognizing the bad patterns and working to break them. Demons? I got 'em. But am living proof that people can change.
Totally agree. We skipped right over "better driver training" in order to have meme stock stocks that short squeeze to nearly $1000. Such awful anti-patterns in humanity.
My take is that Huawei was bugging their hardware the same way the NSA does it and there can be only one. Plus, the US doesn't want Chinese bugged hardware.
On the face of it sure, but then the key people start having heart attacks and mysterious accidents and suddenly the problem goes away. And that's the world we live in.
I wish Journalism could spring back to being more professional where they were a) not so damn partisan and b) actually investigating and not just tossing out wild conspiracy theories as a form of propaganda.
The Atlantic holds zero credibility anymore. It was always a partisan rag, but sometimes had interesting articles. Now, like all "news" it is simply trash.
I laugh at how the New Yorker always injects anti-conservative messaging in its articles because they know their readership desires confirmation bias. It's sick, though. I don't think even Goebbels could have imagined how far this nonsense could be taken and be successful.
The first one I used was a DEC UNIX based workstation. That thing was pretty cool at the time, circa 1993. I learned a ton about UNIX on it and was really my only access to that type of OS until Linux first came out a year or so later.
Later on, I worked at a healthcare company that used a cluster of Alphas running OpenVMS or whatever the hell that OS is called. This was circa 2011-2014. It was DEFINITELY NOT COOL ANYMORE. That hardware was really old and the software on it was subject to frequent restarts due to memory leaks. The company used it to try and operate order intake for a multi-site online pharmacy. The system was impossible to interact with, it had a bizarre TCP socket based API, one awful, buggy, SOAP service, and otherwise data could come out via reports generated in a binary file format. Not strictly DEC's fault as the Alpha hardware did last a long time, but it was generally an awful experience for me to have to deal with that particular system. The company tried and failed to replace it so they doubled down, bought the source code for a ridiculous sum in the millions of dollars, and proceeded to try and maintain it themselves by hiring crusty old timers whose people skills were either way out of date or never existed in the first place.
Oh, and the repairs to the hardware were through a local computer salvage firm that basically bought boards and other bits off of EBay. This is a major player in the online pharmacy space, mind you.
