This is incorrect. Even if the fetus is a person, it has a right to individual liberty. It doesn’t have a right to another person’s body. If it can’t survive without someone else’s organs it’s right to survival doesn’t out weigh the hosts right to bodily autonomy.
An easy comparison is organ donation. We don’t require organ donation from corpses (much less demand organs from living people who have a ‘spare’) even though a lack of available organs does limit the life/liberty of people who need them. The uterus is no different than a kidney. You don’t have the right to demand to use someone else’s organs even if your life depends on them.
There are often a lot of steps between a discovery (or even a patent) and commercial viability. Patents make it easier for the companies to raise funding to do that work and move from theoretical or small scale to an actual product.
Also you could argue that patents are open access. The whole point of a patent is you give a complete summary of what the invention is and how to replicate it (with a level of detail that would allow someone knowledgeable in the field to recreate it) in exchange for a time limited legal moat.

Oh she/you should check out mast cell activation syndrome (mcas). Basically different foods increase histamine levels in the body or prevent its degradation. Old proteins and fermented foods are particularly problematic because microbes break down the protein and release histamine precursors.
This is my biggest frustration with the code they generate (but it does make it easy to check if my students have even looked at the generated code). I dont want to fail silently or hard code an error message, it creates a pile of lies to work through for future debugging
I think you've misunderstood the situation (and the article). Having the national guard get things under control means pitting them against ICE and likely actually triggering a civil war.

Instead of focusing on emission reductions we need to be talking about the best way to capture and confidently sequester CO2 on the tens of gigaton scale. Has always really bothered me because it assumes that there are no negative impacts of the work you did to get the money. If you do a million dollars worth of damage to the world and earn 100k (or a billion dollars worth of damage to earn a million dollars), even if you spend all of the money you earned on making the world a better place, you arent even going to fix 10% of the damage you caused (and thats ignoring the fact that its usually easier/cheaper to break things than to fix them).
Learning wrong history can be economically relevant. So much of history is about learning patterns of human behavior. Patterns that often repeat. If you learn wrong or untrue history your understanding of and expectations for human behavior will be incorrect which will certainly cause economic issues.
It depends where it’s dumped. I think a lot of people are looking into dumping it into high salinity anoxic basins based on finding carbon with a long residence time there.

Under jack’s Twitter you have freedom from being bombarded with rape threats if you disagree with the wrong influencer.
Personally I prefer the freedom from regime but the nice part of the divide is everyone gets to choose for themselves. I’ve seen more of the people whose create content Im interested in (scientists, artists, authors etc) migrating to Bluesky but it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.
Yes but that’s because you (mostly) stop physically growing once you are out of school. Banded within a year is meaningless for adults, a 25 yr old isn’t that different than a 30 year old but a 5 year old and a 10 year old are distinctly different. They are at different points in their development physically, emotionally and mentally. They socialize differently and have different needs. I’m not saying they can’t interact but there is some value in keeping children together by developmental stage and developmental stage is fairly age specific.
I have high biomass samples from soda lakes (high salinity and alkalinity). Other people in my lab work with soil samples, samples from methane seeps, and low biomass samples from rocks. It could also be useful for wastewater samples.
What’s the general pricing structure? It sounds like you can do 24 samples at once? Approx how much does each sample end up costing (for dna extraction and library prep?).

From my (admittedly shallow) understanding of effective altruism I question how well we can define the ‘effectivness’ of an action.
I worry it prioritizes quantifiable metrics that are easy to compare over more diffuse benefits such as connection and personal bonds that are more difficult to measure (but equally important).
For example I suspect you would argue it’s more cost effective to buy rice from an international supplier and feed 100 people than to use the same money to build a neighborhood garden with supplies from local businesses and feed a handful of people.
But in one case the money remains in the community and continues to do good while in the other it simply further enriches an international conglomerate.
In one case you build community bonds and create a place for people to come together while in the other you potentially undercut the local suppliers, reducing the food supply in an area in the long term.
This is obviously a contrived hypothetical but I’m hoping you can read it in good faith and try to understand a different perspective.
In my mind the arguments for it are
- by helping your neighbor you strengthen your own community, hopefully benefitting yourself and your family
- you don’t have the same understanding of the needs of a community further away. You won’t be able to directly observe the impact of your actions (positive or negative)
I’ve always approached it from the other side and wondered about the appeal of altruism. Is it really so bad if you help your neighbor or someone you know? If you benefit from the improvement in your community is it some how less valuable? Your own community or clan is what you know best, what you are best positioned to help in monetary and non monetary ways.
I also wonder if there is any true altruism. I think people usually benefit from their service or donation even if it’s just feeling good (or perhaps feeling superior to people who focus on supporting their own communities).
