Ads would've resulted in people complaining about user experience. And no one pays a full "lifetime" for anything. For an acquisition like this it's usually a multiple of 5 years of earnings. Probably more because of the popularity.

Yes. The textbook examples really don't do practical applications justice though, e.g.:

  shape
  
  ...
  
  circle extends shape

I find it very useful to extend classes in an existing framework or system with a new functionality specific for my particular problem.

For a general example, sub-typing exceptions is useful.

Laravel is a terrific framework, and if you're building the project from scratch it's my suggestion purely from a maintainability standpoint. It's widely adopted and is decoupled nicely.

Drupal is a fine off the shelf CMS that is very extensible. I'd argue it has framework like features, but with the goal to extend CMS capabilities.

I don't know enough about your use case to suggestion one over the other.

The most important thing written in this post was "A professional picks the right tool for the job." Sometimes WordPress is the right tool for the job, other times it is not.

This applies to software development and engineering too. Pick the right tool (stack) to solve the problem at-hand with an eye towards lifecycle maintenance. As a professional developer for 10+ years, that's one of the most important things I've learned.
