This article just reminds me of how it is human nature to think that "everyone is like me". Most people cannot sleep on demand no matter how hard or what methods they try.
Others are more alert and do better in testing with less than 8 hours of sleep. Some of the greatest minds in history slept 5 hours a night on average.
Everyone is different. Only you know what works well for you. I am tired of people telling others to be like themselves. This most likely will not work. Of course a handful of people will come out of the woodwork and say "this changed my life". This causes even more people to try it. Bummer is that only those handful of people actually benefit from it because we all are vastly unique and there is no one size fits all umbrella formula.
I saw a common theme as I read the article. Emotion and drama everywhere. You've got to run things like a machine. Your decisions were often emotional and late. Your judgement was conflicted, clouded and indecisive. Your decisions often lacked vision, logic and common sense. Your relationships and partnerships suffered because of the interference of your emotions and lack of execution. You lacked the emotional stamina and likely still do. I appreciate your candidness, but it really says a lot about the fact that women face far more challenges when starting/running a business (many coming from their own genetic predisposition for emotional attachment to decisions).
I really did not realize that you were a women right away when reading the article, but I noticed the emotional vibe of your decisions and lack of cool headed logic almost immediately.
Hats off to you because you have more ambition and guts than I do. Sorry for being an critic and an armchair quarterback, but though I haven't been through the ringer like you and am far more risk-adverse. I can certainly identify problems a mile away.
Don't feel too bad or give up. Even Steve Jobs had many of the same flaws as you his first time around. Good luck. you'll only do better next time.

Good PR stunt (posturing) for Google. I call it that because the execs actually know that unless it changes genetics it won't generally be making girls "Exited" (at least not in the long term) about CS. Any marketing campaign can temporarily make believers and stir up happy emotion to "sell" things, but of all the women I have known in CS (this is over 100 including those in high school/college computer classes and throughout my career) I can think of only a couple whom I would consider exited/passionate about it. Around 1%. And this is really the 1% of the 1% (or less) of women who actually ended up in CS. You would think that people would realize that women just aren't into CS like men are. Their brains are different and they just don't generally like it. They naturally think it's uninteresting and boring. It is not generally because of sexism in my experience either. I am not denying that it exists, but I have seen very little. All the women I have worked with have been treated very professionally. I don't think that it is a stigma for a women to be in CS either. I think that other women and men generally regard a women in it pretty highly.
I am all for welcoming women into CS and giving them a fair shake, but in my personal experience the desire is just not there. I don't know how you can manufacture passion. There are industries that are dominated by women workers and those dominated by men. Why do we try to change what people like to do?

I disagree (though I hate inefficient code and design). Hardware has improved massively over the last 30 years. It doesn't quite seem like it sometimes because with the advent of the internet, usage/consumption has gone up just as much. Back in the day a mainframe app on the world's fastest server would only be limited to maybe 1000 concurrent users. Now there could me millions of internet users concurrently using a web app with an actual UI. Having said that, scalability can now be maintained in many ways aside from smaller nm die fabrication. Server farms or cloud distributive scenarios will take over (this is already where we are in many cases) if there is ever a limitation of a single machine. There are only so many people on the planet and consumption rises with us. Hardware improvement may be slowing, but so is consumption inertia (as we reach a saturation plateau).
The problem with your argument is that this trend has been going on for over 20 years (Even during economic boons). Certainly the numbers jumped when the economy tanked, but the numbers were already growing steadily. The point is that the problem transcends the economy. It is most definitely largely a social issue. How many boomerang kids did we see during the great depression? How about the recession in the 70s? Very few when comparing the numbers to today.

Is that really all it is? You see, I thought it may be something to do with the fact that my generation of kids (Gen X) growing up played 3 hours of video games and watched 2 hours of TV a day (Gen Y even more). Don't you think that may just slow down creative entrepreneurial minds a bit? What about the 20% of younger adults on antidepressants? 10% of them smoking pot (also known to quell ambition) What about the highest divorce rates ever? the most kids in day care (being raised by a stranger), the lowest availability of a family sanctuary to nourish a child growing up in the world. To encourage them and let them worry about things like learning without all the turmoil and drama. You don't think that may have made a difference did you? What about kids becoming sexually involved ever younger. You don't think that sexual infatuation would be any kind of distraction from things like ambition and education would you?
Also, genXers and after are very lazy. They were given too much and too little asked/expected of them. Less time has been spent by parents raising their kids in every generation since the great depression. How are kids supposed to become responsible, hard working adults when they are left to their own devices and/or raised in day care? How can a country compete when 1/2-1/3 of the generation is lazy (low work ethic).
Public education has been dumbed down to let the disadvantaged and minorities feel equal. I believe that his was never the proper approach. As such though, kids aren't even learning as much, when they actually should be learning more than the previous generations. The efforts to help minorities and inner city residents have been terribly mishandled, creating government dependent drones who end up in prison, or on welfare/disability over time. This has in many case become a growing and unhealthy co-dependent relationship between the poor/minorities/illegals and the Democrat party.
Look at all the factors which go to play in creating a successful difference maker in a society. What would put someone at and advantage? I would say first of all a loving family who spends time raising their kids themselves. Teaching them all the right things to do in life. Next, an opportunity to learn. Not just an opportunity either, a proper education that makes it interesting. Thirdly, I think that certain demands have to be put on a child as they grow up. Responsibilities and duties. Not that I think kids should study and do chores all day. I believe that kids today do too much homework at a young age. Creativity cannot be taught. Bored kids with a little regulation and opportunity can create their own entertainment and it usually involves a whole lot of creative thought. A kid sitting in front of a TV or video game all afternoon will never experience this.
These things foster ambition and all the tools needed to follow that ambition to fruition (Including the support system to keep them believing in themselves even after failing numerous times along the way)
Last but not least. Free trade and illegal immigration fundamentally changed the workforce of the USA too quickly for us to react. Labor and manufacturing jobs went overseas, or went to illegals. Manufacturing was always a trade that would slowly disappear because of robotics and automation, but not in the span of 10 years. This rapid shift caused many people to gain massive amounts of wealth (the Walton's for example) and at the same time, put many people out of work. It happened so quickly that the workforce could not adapt fast enough to re-train or let people retire as manufacturing becomes obsolete. Illegals make a large amount of wealth for a few, but at the same time put a tax and health care burden on all of our backs as we pay for their education, welfare, and emergency room visits.
I didn't hear any of this in that opinion article, only that monopolies cause these problems. Funny thing is that the monopolies are a mere side effect of a lack of all I have described that was missing from previous generations.
Breaking monopolies into smaller pieces is only going to cause 80% of the countries wealth to be shared by 1.5% of the population instead of 1% (a poor solution IMO)
Partition agenda, bias, selective reporting, covering up, exaggeration, one sided stories and outright lies... That is what I think of when I hear the tern journalism today.
I wish that at least one of these organizations would be tackling all of this rather than focusing on digital content.

I know from personal experience that is does. I had friends who started to change the way they talked about and treated women after becoming heave N.W.A listeners. Years later they told me that they felt that it influenced them negatively and that the influence was pervasive. They regretted listening to that trash.
I don't understand people. You think watching porn regularly doesn't affect how you think sex should be (and what you expect from it)? Sex can never live up to a porno, it's a fantasy. Do you think that porn doesn't contribute to sexual harassment/abuse/assault? It's not hard to find lots of men's blogs, books, movies, ETC whom it has heavily affected. Surveys show that it's negative influence is widespread.
Influential things like gangster rap and porn that go into our brains break and form neuro-pathways. They actually shape how we think long term. They are mind altering in a negative way.

Look, we've got stories all over about the #YesAllWomen phenomenon on twitter currently. All the women asking for equality and stating that they have been sexually harassed/abused/assaulted in some way. Now in this story we have someone who holds a lot of past and current personal responsibility for sending a powerful message of inequality and harassment/abuse toward women.
Seems you are giving him a pass. I just wonder why women never seem to organize anything significant to oppose accounts and portrayals of mistreatment from entertainment sources such as rap music. You are taking the term fight for their countrymen's freedom way too literally. Do you think that generals and military surgeons actually fought (as in combat) anyone at any time? Just because an individual did not see combat, this does not mean that they are not considered to be fighting. The spirit of the armed forces is that they their efforts either in training, studying, or actual combat are all part of a unified effort or fight.
The for freedom part goes back to the founding. The primary mission of the military is to protect the homeland from invasion and occupation. Though they do other things when there is no direct threat, this is still the primary mission today. Just by their presence we remain free. Do you think if the military was abolished tomorrow that we would be free people 2 years from now?
To your examples, Vietnam was fought because communism was seen as in indirect threat to American freedom. Much the same as the goal of overthrowing Saddam Hussein was to start a ripple effect of democracy throughout the middle east. Of course with such uncivilized people, with their constant conflicts and bloodshed over religion, stability and prosperity was never realized. The thought though was that democracy and personal freedom (at least in the west) has generally caused countries to become more prosperous, civil and less threatening to other countries freedom and sovereignty.

IMO Here is the problem with what you are saying. Who actually cleans toilets today? Immigrants (largely illegal ones). This is just like the goods we import from China. There is a slave class of people who clean toilets and work in Chinese factories. I agree with the economic principles where innovation will drive improvement, but illegal immigration and free trade interfere with this.
