STACK
Experience in one/all of the following is appreciated, but we believe tool-specific knowledge is considerably less important than the fundamentals:
You generally don't get investment money day 1. If you are able to pull that, it's because you've had success being a founder before (or have rich friends/family). But as a first-time founder? I think you'd be wasting your time without having something real to show. Generally, that's an MVP with some degree of traction.
To get to that point, you have to do a lot of the things bigger companies have to do. Those things just tend to be less complex and you have fewer people to do them. Accounting, sales, engineering, marketing, etc., etc. all exist, to some degree, in a two-person company. At first, you learn to do them yourself. You'll probably suck at them. It's okay. They all have some degree of a feedback loop. If you're open, you'll figure it out.
Eventually, with success, you'll hire other people to do them.
From there, you can get access to a great network by doing an incubator as someone else mentioned, or by just getting out there and talking to users (do this day 1). But you're worried about years 2-4 when you haven't even started year 1 yet.

What makes you think YC takes fewer risks today than they did before? Going through the list of companies on yclist.com for the most recent batch, there seem like quite a few companies I'd consider risky, even compared to a nascent airbnb, dropbox, stripe, or twitch.
As for several repeat violations mentioned in the thread, you can find several other comments in jrcii's history that have been marked as [flagged][dead].
Different strokes, I imagine. My fiancee is a graphic artist who had a wacom tablet and a cinema display as her setup for a long time, but she got the 27" Cintiq a few months ago and LOVES it. I had similar skepticism that it'd really be that big of a step up, especially given what she was spending on it, but she says it's noticeable improvement on her productivity.
Because it was for a position where I felt it was more justified (cofounder), as compared to a run of the mill developer or team lead position, which is what I've been in the past and where I've refused to sign them.
I also live in Texas and recently signed a non-compete after talking to my attorney.
The general gist is that, yes, they are enforceable. The legislature keeps pushing for them, and the courts have, at various times, pushed back against them. There are limitations on them, but you'd have to talk to an attorney to figure out what they are -- I don't remember exactly what my attorney said. I do know that my attorney said my fairly typical non-compete probably would hold up in court.
While I signed this one, I've just flat out refused to sign them in the past. People seem to have the idea that the employment agreement is set in stone. For some companies it might be, but I've had some success pushing back against clauses I didn't like.
I can't speak for the Canadian side, but I grew up in El Paso. El Paso is right on the Mexican border with another large Mexican city on the other side, Juarez, and a fair amount of travel in both directions. On the US side, everything is done in dollars. On the Mexican side, pesos or dollars both generally work. I can't answer how Mexicans get ahold of dollars -- it's just never been a problem I've had to solve. I would suspect it's similar to when I've gotten local currency outside the US. There are currency exchange places, though I've only seen them in airports, your CC does the conversion automatically, an ATM does, or you go to a bank.
