I went to OSCON last year. It's this kind of whining and the amount of pandering that already goes on that is the reason why _I_ am not attending this year. Not that anyone cares what conferences I do or do not go to?
Does this person have any technical credentials? The web site says “well known speaker”, but there’s nothing else there that suggests any particular expertise.
What a weird question. I went down to the bottom and clicked on the name and found a very thorough bio.
One could also click on literally any of the other links on the page. What critical credential are you looking for but not finding?

After checking myself, some ruby skills, and a lot of social agitation skills.

A guy I know taught himself a new framework by writing an app that gives you biblical footnotes. He was super proud of it and planned to put it on his resume. I smiled and congratulated him for doing such a good job, and kept my fucking mouth shut. I wanted to warn him that some people would pass him over from it. I hated that feeling.
When I was a kid I belonged to a weird religion people liked to make fun of. I was always on the outside and tried to make space for people, as best I could. I was best friends with the new kid (the only one with divorced parents), and ate lunch every day with smartest girl in my grade school (even though I wasn’t quite sure yet that girls weren’t gross) and the only black boy. We colluded to protect the new girl from being bullied for having the audacity to transfer into our busybody district in the sixth grade, and for being a little erratic.
Then I was an atheist in a place where people weren’t. My college roommate and most of his friends were Family, in a time and place where that wasn’t safe. Our neighbor came out to us after he pledged at a fraternity. We were horrified, worried for his welfare.
My ex wife was bi, half of our friends went to Pride every year. Some of them were poly. My SO has transgendered friends and we know three transgender kids.
And this year? This year I’m starting to feel like I have to make safe space for Republicans (I’d be terrible at that, trust me) and Christians. It feels weird. I haven’t even figured out how to process this yet. I don’t think it’s a good feeling though. This doesn’t feel like better. It feels like the bullied becoming the bully.
